Metro X PLAY: play along with piano, at your tempo

Piano accompaniments for voice, violin, cello, flute, clarinet and horn, built from public-domain scores. Steady, Practice or Expressive; slow to 75 or 90%; loop any bars and repeat with a rest in between.

What you get

  • Three playing styles. Steady plays the score in strict time, Practice adds a little breathing room at phrase ends, Expressive plays like a performance with rubato and dynamics.
  • Four tempos. 75, 90, 100 or 110% of the written tempo, without changing the pitch.
  • Loop any bars. Drag the edges of the piece to loop the bars you are working on, then repeat with a rest in between.
  • Tempo ladder. Each repeat steps the tempo up until you reach 100%. Slow a passage down inside the loop and step back up.
  • Count-in, click and piano volume. Metronome click on or off, a count-in before the first bar, and the piano balanced against your instrument.
  • Presets on every device. Saved setups follow your account to iPhone, iPad and Android.
  • A growing library. New pieces arrive in the app as they are added.
  • Practise with your own files. My uploads plays your own recording (MP3, M4A or WAV), MIDI or MusicXML with the same tempo, loop, click and count-in. Five files free; up to 2 GB with Pro.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an app that plays piano accompaniment for violin?

Yes. The Play tab in Metro X has piano accompaniments for violin, cello, voice, flute, clarinet and horn, built from public-domain scores. Choose a piece, a playing style and a tempo, and the piano plays the written accompaniment with you.

Can I slow down the piano accompaniment without changing the pitch?

Yes. Play at 75, 90, 100 or 110% of the written tempo; the pitch stays the same.

Can I loop a few bars of the accompaniment?

Yes. Drag the edges of the piece to loop exactly the bars you are working on, repeat the loop with a rest in between, and turn on the tempo ladder so each repeat steps the tempo up until you reach 100%.

What are the Steady, Practice and Expressive styles?

Steady plays the score evenly and clearly. Practice plays with a pianist's touch while staying on the beat. Expressive plays with free rubato like a performance, and the metronome click follows the pianist.

Can I practise with my own accompaniment recording?

Yes. Upload your own recording (MP3, M4A or WAV), a MIDI file or MusicXML and practise with tempo, loop, click and count-in. Uploads are private to your account.

Is the Play accompaniment free, and does it work offline?

Signed in, five pieces are free with five plays a day. Metro X Pro opens every piece with unlimited plays and offline playback.
